Wilbur's Place http://www.wilbursplace.com/
Location: Potts Point, nearest station is Kings Cross
Cuisine: Seasonal Modern Australian
$$$ per person spent inc drinks: $50
Welcome back! We were literally salivating all of Monday and Tuesday waiting for this experience (Dels even had her menu chosen before we sat down - keen!) Wilbur's Place. Who got the hint from last month's Subsolo session? Wasn't that a smart riddle? ;P Bron thought she was rather clever!
Just so you all know, we don't pretend that we know a great deal about food or that we're experts, we just want to tell our point of view about Sydney food. And help sort through all the Advertising garbage we're fed about places who just have heaps of money to spend on Advertising - no we're here to let you know how we really think it is... is the place worth going to... HELL yes!
And here's why...
AMBIENCE
Dels says 'A
tiny place in a small lane with seating out in the open. Perfect for warm
nights'
DKay says 'Small but cosy/ homely feel. Not suitable on a cold, rainy day though’
Kaan says 'I felt like I was stepping back in time into a staff kitchen of a 5 star
hotel in the late 1950’s. But in a good way’
Bron says 'Quirky vibe! Love it! it made me feel like I was sitting in a friend's kitchen but eating gourmet cuisine'

Toasted Brioche Ice Cream Sandwich with Caramel $12

Tuna Crudo with Horseradish, Pickled Onions & Fried Capers $15
Dels says 'I
was a good dish but didn’t stand out for me'
DKay says ''Fresh
tuna, fresh ingredients – very tasty.'
Kaan says 'Very
flavoursome just disappointed in the portion size. Loved the fried capers’
Bron says ' Yum, I loved this. The tuna was the perfect size, and went so well with the fried capers! A must try!'
Fennel, Pecorino, Blood Orange & Broad Bean Salad $15
Dels says 'Absolutely loved this salad! Please do not take it off the menu!! Ingedients
blend well together to create a fresh, light and delicious salad. Lots of
pecorino cheese which I LOVED!
DKay says 'Yum!
Good combination of flavours and textures. Quite large as an entree. Favourite
dish of the night. Would definitely suggest you share.’
Kaan says 'Perfect
portion size and I think the flavours were well balanced especially with the
citrus of the blood orange.
Bron says 'Lovely fresh, crunchy salad! Loved the blood orange... perfect tang!'
Suckling Pig with Pencil Leeks, Sprouts, Blood Sausage & Onion Rings $22
DKay says 'The
combination of textures & flavours perfectly complements each other. Good
portion too.’
Kaan says 'Probably
the second best part of the dinner was this meal. Love that there was so much
variety on the plate. The Pork was so juicy but my favourite part was the blood
sausage. A must have.’
Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder with Chickpeas, Pumpkin, Cavalo Nero & Tahini Yoghurt $22
Dels says 'don’t
normally like lamb but I don’t mind it if its slow roasted so I gave it a go.
It was delicious, especially with the yoghurt, fantastic combination. However
my lamb was very fatty which I was disappointed with. The chickpeas and veggies
were great.
Bron says 'This
was my favourite dish. It was fresh and tasty. The chickpeas made the dish a
little hearty, but I didn't feel overly full afterwards as is always the case
with lamb shoulder. This felt healthy, and was bursting with flavour'
Beans with Garlic & Chilli Oil $7
Dels says 'I ate half the bowl. Loved the different beans
and the seasoning was perfect.'
DKay says 'Chilli – love. Garlic – love. Crunchy fresh beans – love!’
DKay says 'Chilli – love. Garlic – love. Crunchy fresh beans – love!’
Kaan says 'Perfect light side’
Bron says ' Yummy
and crunchy!'
Toasted Brioche Ice Cream Sandwich with Caramel $12
Dels says ''Looks
great and sounds great but did not like this! Too much of a bread taste and not
enough icecream.
DKay says 'Interesting
concept. Too bready for me though. Combination of lemon sandwich & caramel
was surprisingly nice.’
Kaan says 'This is
probably the highlight of my night. I was absolutely amazed by the wackiness of
the idea. I initially thought the lemon ice-cream wouldn’t go well with the
caramel brioche, but surprise surprise it was a perfect match.’
Bron says ' Couldn't
get my head around the fact it felt like I was eating a toasted sandwich!
Tasted amazing though - very filling!'
Vanilla Tart with Ice Cream $12
Dels says 'I
preferred this dessert to the other however it was a bit too creamy for my
liking.'
DKay says 'Nice
creamy tart but lacked punch. Maybe should be combined with a more flavoursome
ice cream?’
Kaan says 'didn’t
like it that much. I thought it was too eggy.’
Bron says 'I love
creamy desserts so this was just up my alley. Tasted like Creme Brule - but
looked like a cheese cake. Not worth $12 though'
VINNOOOOOOOOO
Bron and Dels ordered the following wines:
Yarran 2012 Pinot Grigio $7.50
Dels _ nice and crisp taste_
Tertini 2008 Pinot Noir $9.50
Bron _ I didn't enjoy this Pinot Noir much, it was very light and had a real rough bite to it at the end_ |
OVERALL TEAM VIEWSSSS
Dels says ''I
tend to overeat and leave dinner feeling sickly full so despite finishing
everything on my plate at Wilbur’s, I felt great when it was time to leave. All
of the dishes are healthy, light and delicious. I loved this place and will
definitely return again soon.'
DKay says 'Great
vibe, well portioned, flavoursome food. Would definitely drop in again! But
only during the warmer months..’
Kaan says 'A
perfect spot for a weekend lunch. The food is fresh and different. Will
definitely have to revisit this place when we’re near Kings Cross again.’
Bron says 'I can
see this place being a regular visit - loved the vibe, loved the food. Pity
about the wine and the fact that it's in Kings Cross, but I would go again for
the food! Delish!'
KAAN WILL SHELVE (i.e. not very good)
Nothing - GREAT place - we recommend it to all!
AND THE WINNING WILBUR GOES TO:
DKay says 'Fennel,
Pecorino, Blood Orange & Broad Bean Salad. Great combination and very
refreshing.’
Kaan says 'The
Brioche ice-cream sandwich with the crazy lemon ice-cream!’
Bron says 'Absolutely loved the lamb shoulder - just a wonderfully fresh, healthy and tasty meal. I would have happily paid $30 for it so at $22 it is very good value!'
Team meets at the end of the month....
Hint : Great Wall of Toys... (yes, another Bron riddle... LOL)
